Development and Implementation of a Continuing Medical Education Program in Canada: Knowledge Translation for Renal Cell Carcinoma (KT4RCC)
The objective of this study was to develop a CME program and determine if the program was effective for improving participant knowledge. CME programs for clinicians were delivered by local experts (uro-oncologist and medical oncologist) in four Canadian cities. Participants completed knowledge assessment tests pre-CME, immediately post-CME, and 3-month post-CME. Test questions were related to topics covered in the CME program including prognostic factors for advanced disease, surgery for advanced disease, indications for hereditary screening, systemic therapy, and management of small renal masses. Fifty-two participants at...

New Approaches to Continuing Medical Education: a QStream (spaced education) Program for Research Translation in Ovarian Cancer
This study examined the impact of an online Qstream education program on senior clinicians to determine its utility for increasing clinician knowledge about the latest guidelines regarding genetic assessment and consideration of genetic testing for women with particular types of ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer. Participants were recruited into a pilot study that involved responding to case-based scenarios at spaced and repeated intervals. At the completion of the program, semi-structured interviews were conducted to ascertain the impact on their knowledge and referral behavior. Findings from interview...

“Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver” Palliative Educational Program: The Results of a Survey Assessing Physicians’ Perceptions of Drama-Based Education for End-of-Life Care
AbstractInadequate palliative care training in medical education is associated with many physicians feeling unprepared to care for dying patients and their families. Therefore, an opportunity exists to offer physicians continuing medical education that increases their understanding of and comfort with complex palliative care issues. The goal of the current study was to evaluate TheConfessions of a Reluctant Caregiver Palliative Educational Program as an educational tool for physicians. The study employed a cross-sectional post-performance evaluation survey assessing physicians ’ perceptions of theConfessions of a Relucta...

Competency-Based Medical Education in Canadian Radiation Oncology Residency Training: an Institutional Implementation Pilot Study
This study demonstrates that CBD assessments can be completed regularly in an outpatient radiation oncology setting and that implementation challenges include improving feedback quality, promoting direct observation, and continuing faculty development to improve perceptions of this assessment model. Further study is required to identify best practices and expectations for the discipline in the era of CBME.

Team-Based Learning Module for Undergraduate Medical Education: a Module Focused on the Human Papilloma Virus to Increase Willingness to Vaccinate
AbstractHuman papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination rates lag behind other vaccines, primarily because of weak provider recommendations, and are associated with nearly 30,000 new cancer diagnoses a year. Educating medical students about HPV using active, team-centered learning may increase assimilation of information and may increase vaccination rates. A team-based learning (TBL) module focused on HPV for first-year medical students about HPV will better increase knowledge and likeliness to vaccinate than traditional education methods. Baseline HPV knowledge in medical students across Texas was assessed by surveying all 4-year...

Medical Hematology/Oncology Fellows ’ Perceptions of Online Medical Education During the COVID-19 Pandemic
AbstractIn response to the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, residency and fellowship programs transitioned to virtual instruction to deliver didactics and continue with medical education. The efficacy of such a fully online learning environment, however, remains unknown. To investigate its impact on medical education, this study surveyed hematology/oncology fellows at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center on their attitudes regarding the online-based lecture program. Fellows were emailed a 19-question survey with questions on demographics, ease of technical access to the online platform, level of comfort ...

Considerations for Designing and Implementing a Multi-institution Undergraduate Medical Education Experience
AbstractCancer Care Experience (CCE) is a unique elective educational program to further explore the subspecialty of oncology beyond the scope of the traditional undergraduate medical education curriculum. During the COVID-19 pandemic, CCE moved from an in-person to a virtual learning platform. This transition allowed program leaders to offer CCE as a multi-institutional program, with students participating from both Duke University School of Medicine and Penn State College of Medicine. Our study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of virtual learning, student perspectives on multi-institutional collaboration, and the p...

Nationwide implementation of stereotactic radiotherapy: The challenges of initial training and continuing professional education.
Abstract Stereotactic body radiation therapy is a rapidly growing advanced treatment technique that delivers high radiation dose with great precision. The implementation of stereotactic body radiation therapy should be associated with a specific initial training and continuing professional education for radiation oncologists and medical physicists. The creation of a French stereotactic body radiation therapy group gathering radiation oncologists (SFRO and AFCOR) and medical physicists (SFPM) is mandatory in order to create dedicated national guidelines, prospective databases and to promote clinical trials in this ...

Project ECHO for Cancer Care: a Scoping Review of Provider Outcome Evaluations
AbstractThe Project ECHO model of telementoring has been used for the past 10  years to expand access to specialized cancer care. This scoping review identifies evidence for the model’s ability to improve provider outcomes, synthesizing findings from existing studies within Moore et al.’s (2009) framework for continuing medical education outcomes. We search two large res earch databases and a collection maintained by Project ECHO staff for articles that focus on cancer ECHO programs, involve primary data collection, and were published between December 1, 2016, and November 30, 2021. We identified 25 articles for inclu...

Preclinical Medical Student Hematology/Oncology Education Environment
Abstract To better prepare medical students to care for patients in today’s changing health-care environment as they transition to continuing their education as residents, many US medical schools have been reviewing and modifying their curricula and are considering integration of newer adult learning techniques, including team-based learning, flipped classrooms, and other active learning approaches (Assoc Am Med Coll. 2014). Directors of hematology/oncology (H/O) courses requested an assessment of today’s H/O education environment to help them respond to the ongoing changes in the education content and enviro...

Exploring Family Physician Training Needs to Improve Cancer Patient Care
This study explored the needs and perspectives of family physicians regarding their oncology training and experiences. As well, physician cancer care experiences, knowledge use, and continuing education practices were elucidated. The authors employed a qualitative approach with family physicians participating in semi-structured interviews. General practitioners in oncology were excluded. Purposeful sampling was used, with recruitment through Ontario regional primary cancer care leads and social media. Interviews were transcribed, and thematic analysis was conducted. Thirteen participants were interviewed —1.6:1 female: m...

Increasing faculty participation in resident education and providing cost-effective self-assessment module credit to faculty through resident generated didactics
Conclusions We are the first department, to our knowledge, to offer SAM credit to clinical faculty for participation in resident generated didactics. Offering SAM credit at resident lectures is a cost effective alternative to purchasing SAM resources, increases faculty attendance and may improve the quality of radiation oncology resident education.

Oncology training and education initiatives in low and middle income countries: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: There is a paucity of oncology training and education initiatives in LMICs published in English. Initiatives for non-physicians, efforts to foster collaboration within and between LMICs, knowledge sharing initiatives and studies that measure the impact of these initiatives on developing an effective workforce are highly recommended.PMID:34824619 | PMC:PMC8580602 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2021.1296
